mpc motorbikes ural-uk Dare to be differenT
model identification
We specialize in ural flat twin motorcycles/sidecars from Russia, Dnepr motorbikes/sidecars from the Ukraine, overhead valve and sidevalve versions. Over the years these bikes have been known under various names, cossacks, nevals, urals, uralmoto, dnepr, IMZ, KMZ
We do get a lot of calls from people who don't know whether they have a Ural or Dnepr, sidevalve or overhead valve, so below is a quick guide
Side valve can be distinguished by flat sided cylinder head with 2 portions to the top end, barrel and cylinder head
Overhead valve can be distinguished by a wider engine with 3 portions to the top end, barrel, cylinder head and rocker cover
Ural overhead valve engines come in two sizes 650cc and 750cc
the earlier 650cc engines have a cast iron barrel bolted directly to the crankcase with studs on the barrel to mount the aluminum head, with a oval rocker cover with push fit down pipes
the later 750cc engines have a aluminum barrel mounted to a aluminum head with a shaped rocker cover with push fit down pipes studs pass through barrel and head
Dnepr 650cc over head valve engines have a aluminum barrel mounted to a aluminum head with a rectangular rocker cover, the mounting studs are visible through the barrel fins the exhaust has a screw on mounting fin fitting
There are various other major differences between urals and dneprs, to name just a few, these are relevant to over head valve engines
Tanks,
ural more oval with central seam covered in rubber edging, with oval knee pads. Dnepr tank is more square, (often called a toaster tank) larger knee pads
Frames
Dnepr looks heavier built, swinging arm runs inside the rear frame
ural swinging arm runs outside the rear frame
Gearboxes
Ural gearboxes did not have reverse until 1999(approx)but did have a hand gear change on the right hand side. When the reverse gear was added you push rearwards to get reverse
Dnepr gearboxes have a reverse which is push forwards to engage, they also have a declutching device which works when gear lever depressed to engage gears, however some early units came without one or both.....
Engines
apart from the external differences, the dneprs run shell bearings and the urals roller bearings
Wheels
commonly dnepr wheels have a 90 degree bend on the spoke with a cast aluminum hub, early ural wheels used a pressed steel hub with different sized spokes, later urals used aluminum hub with straight spokes
chang jiang
how to recognize a real vintage chang from a non vintage one....
M1M engine 12 volts with distributor external on left of engine, dipstick at top of engine,, POST 1986, M1 engine no external distributor 6 volt electrics, dipstick at lower part of engine and no electric starter, pre 1986 there was a period from 1970 to 1986 where some older style engines were used with the low dipstick but every bike i have seen has the high level dipstick... gearbox pre 1986 no reverse,, frame early bikes had grease nipples on headstock, later no grease nipples. sidecar frames,, early no sidecar wheel suspension after approx 1969 sidecars had suspension, all of the above applies to both sidevalve and overhead valve engines.
more to follow as time allows,,,,,
Tthis is only designed as a basic guide but if anyone wishes to point out any other major differences, or anything i have omitted feel free to email me
